2015 Lunar New Year Lion Dance Performances

During the Lunar New Year, lion dance troupes from Chinese martial art schools or Chinese guilds and associations will visit the houses and businesses of the Chinese community to bring good luck and fortune.  Firecrackers and the color red are used to scare off the mythological beast called the Nian.  Red envelopes with money (a few dollars or much more) are given by adults, especially married couples, and elderly to young children.  It was used to deter evil from children, keep them healthy and give them a long life.

We welcome White Dragon Martial Arts to Jasmine to bring us all good fortune in this coming year!

The Lunar New Year is the biggest and most celebrated holiday in Chinese tradition. It is customary to give children “lucky money” in much coveted “red envelopes” in exchange for well wishes. Folks of all ages enjoy watching Lucky Lion Dancers trained in martial arts and acrobatics “dancing” to traditional Chinese drums, cymbals, bells and other instruments. As the Lion Dancers near, celebrants will “feed” the Lions lucky red envelopes with money as a symbol of bringing luck and fortune. The more you give, the more you get in return! The video below shows just that from a previous performance at Jasmine Restaurant. Enjoy!

Please also note that Monday, January 16 and Tuesday, January 17 we will be closing at 8:30pm. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
