San Diegans and Jasmine Raises Money for Typhoon Haiyan Relief

On December 4, 2013, approximately 350 San Diegans gathered at Jasmine Seafood Restaurant to raise money for Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts.  Over $13,000 was raised with all food and venue donated by Jasmine.  Artistic youths donated their singing talents to contribute $1300 in fundraising efforts.

The ultimate goal of the organizing group composed mainly of Lions Club members and Jasmine Seafood Restaurant is to ultimately raise $66,000 to build a sustainable village of 20 homes, costing $3300 each, through the ongoing 15 year nation-building work of Gawad Kalinga, an international organization based in the Philippines with U.S. 501(c)3 designation.

Dr. Allen Chan, owner of Jasmine Seafood Restaurant and Lions Club member, remarked, “Charity has no national boundaries. It is not affected by the color of your skin nor is it the privilege of the rich few. Anyone, no matter what social economic status you belong to, can lend a helping hand by volunteering your time and effort or donating your money, or both.”  In November the Vietnamese American community of San Diego also raised $12,000 for Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts.

Upcoming fundraising events to  achieve the village building goal include:

1.   December 31, 2013 – New Year’s Eve Countdown Party at Jasmine Seafood Restaurant

2.   January 24, 2014 – Multi-ethnic Lunar New Year Celebration at Jasmine Seafood Restaurant.

Donations may also be made directly to the San Diego United Lions Club via their website.
